Finding a suitable location in which to shoot your production doesn't have to be difficult—all you need is an area that has a wide variety of video-related resources and skilled professionals who know what they are doing. Arizona has the proper resources needed to create excellent-quality video. Here are five ways in which the "valley of the sun" excels at being an assett to the video production community at large.
Arizona has a reputation of being a sandy, dry desert, but it's got a lot more going for it geologically than just that one type of landscape. While you can find plenty of desert scenery covered in saguaro cacti and rocks, you can also find forests in areas such as northern Arizona, near Flagstaff, and also in the mountains of more southern areas, such as near Tucson.
There are small towns, big cities, lonely roads, well-traveled freeways, wheat fields, unique mountain ranges, and scrub brush all waiting for you. The Grand Canyon is in the state, of course, along with the Virgin River Gorge in the northwest.
In addition to the landforms, the state offers all types of weather. From dry heat to snow to monsoonal rain and dusty haboob sandstorms, you can find pretty much any type of environmental condition. Enjoy a sunny, mild day filming in Tucson in winter, and then drive up into the nearby mountains to find snow-covered trees and icy creeks.
Of course, if the weather gets too hot for you in the summer, you can escape into well-air-conditioned studios in most cities. Arizona is proud to have some excellent film studios such as Loft 19, Reelmen Studios, Arizona Studios, and Glendale Media Center in Glendale. These offer equipment rental, green/blue screen services, and other video-related facilities, allowing you to work on all of your production and post-production in the state. Along with the studios, you can find talented crews who are well-trained. If you have crew positions to fill, you don't have to worry about searching for them out of state.
While you can always build sets in studios, sometimes it's easier to find a rental house or available commercial building for on-location shooting. Arizona (Phoenix and Tucson in particular) has relatively high rental vacancy rates compared to the rest of the nation. Whether you want an apartment or house, you can find the location you need with little to no hassel.
And finally, once you need to start casting, you have a lot of talent agencies in the state to work with. They can help you find the right actors for your production, and you won't have to worry about waiting for the actors to travel in from other states. Arizona has a lot to offer, and if you need to keep things local, setting up shop in Arizona is the way to go.
