Why is video production so expensive?
Technology is constantly changing in the Film/Video industry and innovators are constantly coming out with more affordable avenues to take before, during, and after production. But this does not mean that video production is cheap by any means. There is a fee for every little process along the way, not to mention the equipment needed to accomplish a video production successfully.
In theory, yeah, you can pull together a bunch of favors from people who dabble in the industry, and get a shoot done for next to nothing, but let's be honest... Who knows that many people with nothing to do in the industry that adore them... Not many. When you're relying on all favors, your asking the film gods to strike you with a string of bad luck. There's a guideline in the industry and that is to consider Murphy's Law at all times while dealing with a production. If one is not familiar with how a Video/Film production is carried out and has a lot of misconceptions about what is achievable, then they are in for a rude awakening if one is planning on cutting a lot of corners.
If you need to cut corners, make sure you're cutting the right ones. It's never a bad thing to save money if you can, but there are areas where you always want to make sure that you're getting what you paid for. The camera department, the editing in post, the sound design, these are just a few things you do not want to chintz on and that are crucial to creating an effective end result.
We all wish it didn't cost so much to get it done, but that's what you get when you witness Oz behind the curtain. One sees how it's all truly put together and the realization sets in that in order to get the effect you want, you've got to find or put up the money to get it done the right way.
